Originally founded in England in 1884, Marks & Spencer Plc. is a world-famous retailing chain today specialized in clothing and accessories, household goods, and foods, operating with more than 600 stores in 30 countries. The company, celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2009, is operating in accordance with its worldwide growth strategy.
After the purchase of Marks & Spencer franchising rights in Turkey from Marks & Spencer Plc. in 1999, the Company became the sole party in Turkey, holding the right of opening and managing Marks & Spencer stores.
Total number of stores reached 37 in December 2008 with 15 stores in Istanbul, 5 stores in Ankara,4 stores in İzmir, 3 stores in Bursa, 2 stores in Bodrum and one store each in Antalya, Konya, Adana, Kayseri, Eskişehir, Trabzon, Mersin and Gaziantep .
Marks & Spencer targets to continue being a pioneer establishment in Turkey's retail sector without making any concessions from its standarts of presenting high quality products with favourable prices and best service.
In cooperation with Finansbank, the company introduced a Marks & Spencer shopping card that offers its customers various advantages. Additionally, "+plus" card was launched in November 2003 and reached approximately 644,276 customers to date. 79% of December 2007 to December 2008 sales were realized through M&S and +plus cards.
The company offered customers special promotions and exclusive services in accordance with the Customer Relations Management systems launched in 2003. Aware of its social responsibilities, the Company cooperated with Mother and Child Education Foundation (AÇEV) and contributed to the education of 15,000 families.
The Company, has purchased franchising rights of Marks & Spencer Russia in 2005 and Marks & Spencer Ukraine in 2006. The Company is operating with 15 stores and 597 employees in Russia and operating with 4 stores and 124 employees in Ukraine.
